A New Year, A New Resolution
Wanda wade
My approach to the
new year isn’t unlike many of you. I see it as a time of resolve by doing those
things that have alluded me all year. I look in the mirror and say to myself,
this is the year that I’ll be successful in cutting carbs from my diet or writing
in my journal consistently. Initially I’d
feel inspired, like I can achieve all the things on my list. I even incorporate
familiar adages to aid in my pursuit; out
with the old, in with the new or new year, new you. I chant these like Angela
Bassett’s character did in What’s Love Got to Do with It? Only to be disappointed
a month later because once again, I couldn’t stick with it.
With the new year quickly
approaching, it’s easy to feel rushed, like my time is running out and I haven’t
made up my mind, and before long I’ll find myself behind the curve. However, this
time my approach will be different. I’ve come up with a strategy that’s sure to
get me to the finish line; my approach is key. In the
past I’d start thinking about a new year’s resolution after Christmas, when I should’ve been putting my plan into motion months before. Your new year’s resolution
is like any goal that you’re trying to accomplish, so using the same technique will
help.
If you’re unsure of what that is or you don’t
have a sure fire approach, I’ll share what has worked for me. First, make sure
your resolution is realistic, setting unrealistic expectations will guarantee failure. This is not the time to
try to conquer the world, small changes are more attainable and your rate for
success is better.
The goal of a new
year resolution is to change or improve upon a certain area of your life. Although
this is a great time to make improvements, be careful not to bite off
more than you can chew. Take inventory and decide what resolution(s) are right, depending
on where you are in your life. Also, make sure you’re ready for the changes that go along with your decision because
if not, the odds are against you fulfilling your intended resolution.
Now that you’re
equipped, go ahead and move forward with your decision. Good luck & happy
New Year!
